Missing Grandpa Dearly

18 October 2009

I apologize for the long hiatus. I blame it on the busy & hectic schedules while I also point the fingers at my addiction with FB’s application ‘Mousehunt‘.

I have nothing much to share except for honoring my late maternal grandpa. If you happen to have a copy of today’s Sin Chew Daily, you would probably come across the obituary of ‘Ng Boon Lan’. He passed away peacefully on Friday (16th Oct) morning and I got to say we will be missing him. I just pray that grandpa will seek peace eternally in life after death.

Grandpa bday 2009

Grandpa has lived a very long age. That’s almost a century. He sailed all the way from China with Grandma and my 1st aunty.  He survived World War II. He built his own factory that makes coaches and buses. He fed his 9 children well.

He was very proud to have 29 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren to-date.

He could even drive us around when he was still in his 80’s but as his eyesight gets worse, we stopped him from driving when he was around 86 years old.

Grandpa's bday 2009

Well, it was just like yesterday when I attended grandpa’s 93rd (94th according to Chinese calendar) birthday. In fact, the birthday celebration was held very recently – 4th October. Yes, it’s only 2 weeks ago.

I have to admit that it was so wrong of me to think that I would have at least another few years of grandpa’s birthdays to attend in future. This preposterous thought caused me not to have a latest picture taken with grandpa. This is really giving me a tight slap on my face.

To even think about it, I have so few photos taken with grandpa. I have a few hard copies of pictures taken during my childhood. And the only ones I am cherishing so much now are the ones I have taken since digital cameras came in trend.

Oh well, I am going to miss the way grandpa shouts and scolds when something agitates him. I am going to miss looking forward for grandpa’s birthday dinners. I am definitely going to miss kissing grandpa’s cheeks each time I say goodbye before going back to KL.

I am slightly emo now. Can’t think much to write of but I am certainly missing grandpa now.

Are You Addicted to Sugar?

6 October 2009

About 95% of people are addicted to sugar.

Sugar as a basic food carbohydrate primarily comes from sugar cane and from sugar beet, but also appears in fruit, honey, sugar maple (in maple syrup), and in many other sources. But we do not need an excessive amount of sugar in our daily lives.

Sugar

Many of us have cravings for sweet stuff or have a ‘sweet tooth’, without knowing that we may have an addiction problem. How many of us here loves chocolates, candies, ice-creams, cookies and cakes? Aplenty!

According to a study, refined sugar is far more addictive than cocaine.

They even did a study to allow rats to choose between sugar, water and cocaine. 94% of the rats chose sugar. Even rats which were previously addicted to cocaine, switched their preference to sugar, when sugar was offered as a choice.

Can you believe this?

Sugar intake kid

Look at this bunting. It says, ‘This child eats 43 teaspoons of sugar in a day“.

It is absolutely unacceptable to unknowingly consume such an inordinate amount of sugar in a day.

Sugar Kills

Malaysians are one of the world’s largest consumers of sugar. We consume about 3.6kg of sugar per month or 25 teaspoons per day. The average world consumption of sugar is only 11 teaspoons per day.

About 3.5 million Malaysians are diabetic. Diabetes causes complications after complications. It will lead to death if left untreated.

What can I say? We often see Malaysians ordering Teh Ais, Teh Tarik, Sirap Ais during a normal meal. Not forgetting the amount of Coke or Pepsi we consume when we visit a nearby KFC or McDonald’s.

Look at our staple food. Rice. A bowl of white rice contains approximately 20 teaspoons of sugar! Now, this is scary!

Having said that, the questions is “Are you addicted to sugar?
