Form 1 English is way TOO Easy!!

7 February 2009

My one and only brother, Jeremy is no longer a small boy. He is moving into his teens. Stepping into secondary school means an all new era for him.

As I was browsing through my brother’s English exercises, I almost fell off my chair.

Seriously, no joke.

Let’s look into his English Comprehension/ Summary exercise book.

Wait, Jeremy is in Secondary One. Not Primary One!

Why is he learning matching pictures with words? Don’t they learn what’s charcoal and fire when they are in Primary school??

You mean they don’t learn how to construct sentences in primary school? Shouldn’t they be learning how to write longer essays at this age?

What has happened to our dearest Malaysian education?

Can someone please tell me why is the standard of Secondary 1 English has dropped so much compared to our era?

I can’t believe this!

No wonder I still find conversations like this; “Excuseeee me, miss. I want a letter signature from your boss by your company and you cannot forgotten to fax to me, you know?”

Buat aku pengsan terus!

I’m just curious…is your brother in the best class?

  21. Fenny Says:

Dont simply blame educators which trying their best educate ur brother. His teacher teaches his/her students depending on students’level in diff classes but still referring d same syllabus. Nowadays, they do researches to enhance students’ fluency n accuracy in English. especially grammar. Simple mistake in grammar will affect their marks in essay writing…summary… oral test… MUET… Dari tahun 1 until university… we learn d same English dear.. but d level akan up2 lg ma….

  22. daffodils Says:

i just read the comments posted above, WELL, Grace, I’M ALSO CURIOS..IS THAT UR BROTHER IN THE LAST CLASS?!..for ur information, english teachers sometimes really have to go down that english standard u talking about…just because the students can’t even read or pronounce the English words..
so that, from knowing nothing…nowaday, students know how to say ‘thank you’ to someone..

  23. PiggyGrace Says:

My brother is definitely in the best class. I have no idea why the standards have been pulled down drastically, but all I know is, if we keep doing that, we will never be able to compete with the developed nations with the incompetency of the English language in our country.

A friend recently told me how a graduate failed in her interview. My friend was the HR director of a well known bank and she almost fell off her chair with the answers she received from the fresh graduate.

Graduate: This is my resume (she pronounced resume as if it’s the meaning of continue).
Interviewer: How can I address you?
Graduate: My address is Jalan Pinang, blablablabla…

hi, the exercises that your brother did, was actually a programme called OPSME.Orientation Programme For Science and Mathematics in English. This programme is compulsory to all Form 1 students regardless their level of proficiency(perhaps some of the students in your brother’s class are weak)…the main objective of this programme is to introduce students with simple scientific and mathematical terms for students..the programme is made to fit all types of students..you have to bear in mind that not all students in Malaysia are familiar with English especially in rural areas. Please don’t just simply bombard the education system without simply know the real situation.
