Chengmai Thai Food Restaurant
13 August 2008
Short-Note: Kuala Terengganu is super boring town. I will try to finish my work as soon as possible and I want to leave this place.

Many friends told me that it is tough to find a good restaurant in Kelantan as it is an Islamic state. However, you have to get assistance from your local friends to bring you around as the delicious food are often hidden in this state.
To find a place to dine in Kota Bharu is not difficult after all. All you have to do is to drive about 12-15km away from the heart of the Islamic Capital, heading towards Tumpat.

I will give you the directions starting from Tesco in Kota Bharu.
GETTING THERE:
Go across the bridge (Tesco on your left). First and second roundabout, go straight (12 o’clock) heading towards Tumpat and Pengkalan Kubur (the border town between Kelantan and Thailand).
When you see a police station for Wakaf Baru on your left, head for a turn to the left into a small lane with a pintu gerbang with BN, UMNO and PAS flags.
Take the first left immediately after you pass a restaurant on your right. Follow the road RIGHT IN past Ban Kok Thai Restaurant and the Siamese temple (which I blogged about yesterday). You should see the sign for the restaurant about 500 metres ahead.

Chengmai Thai Food restaurant offers one of the best Thai eateries in town. You have to travel through small and bumpy roads to get in there.
I presume the people who worked here are Thai Chinese. They watched Thai channels on the TV but spoke Hokkien to me while ordering food.

The little black box on your top right is playing Thai channels all night long as the workers and the owner would sit down and watch if there is nothing much to do.

This TOM YAM seafood is extremely delicious and I can say it is on par with the ones I ate in Bangkok.

This is one of Chengmai restaurant’s signature dishes. Directly translated from Chinese, it is called the ’Burning Standing Chicken’.
When it is served, you would see fire on the dish for about 1 minute to make the skin crispier.
For 3 dishes and a few drinks, I was charged RM39 for two pax. Expensive? Perhaps it is a tad pricey but I’m willing to empty my wallet for a scrumptious meal!
YUMMY! I am glad I still remember the location even though it was 1 year ago when my ex-colleague brought me here.

Hi Grace,
Yeah I know Wakaf Baru very well. In fact I have some relatives that stays very close to the Chiengmai reataurant. They do serve good thai food except it has become a fusion of Thai, Chinese and Malaysian. There are other similar restaurants in that area surrounding the Thai temple, like Bangkok, Pattaya, Banthai etc which also has good food. Chiengmai is a little pricey though. One thing which I still can’t get use to eating is their belut or eel (the locals love it) and their ayam laut (frogs) I think. Yeah great food.
Where’s your next destination? Try Europe - There’s this place in Switzerland that I simply love, its called Montreux on Lake Geneva (the Swiss Riviera they called it. Ever heard of the famous Montreux Jazz Festival. Theres a quaint statue of Freddie Mercury there and the famous Deep Purple number ‘Smoke on the Water’ was written inspired by the town. Try to go there if you have the chnce. London is exciting, Paris, romantic and Rome, historical except there’s too many con artists there. Will advise you from time to time. Yeah I have been to too many places and now anchored down.

Hi BangMalaysia…
I will be going to East Coast every two months once now due to job requirements… Do introduce some local delicacies for me to try…and I love Thai Food… sour & Spicy!
My next destination will be HongKong + Macau + Shenzhen during the Raya holidays. This trip was planned last year in fact due to the Air Asia early bookings. Will be going with my ex-colleagues.
As for Europe, it’s kinda hard.. due to the foreign exchange is high and the air fare is costly because of the hike in fuel surcharge…
I wish I could visit Europe too….

HongKong, Macau and Shenzen is fun too but they are a bit commercialized. Yes things are a bit expensive these days. My favorite city is New York though, its a city with a pulse and heartbeat. Most expensive - Tokyo and Geneva. A plate of ordinary fried rice in Geneva cost about RM20. Most beautiful and romantic to me is San Francisco and Auckland.

But a city that has all - the ultimate for me is Vancouver though, its beaches, mountains and parks is simply fabulous. Theres so many Chinese there, it makes you feel at home. Its just like walking down Orchard Road or Petaling Street down in Vancouver. Other interesting cities in Canada are Quebac city, Montreal (try to make it to the Montreal Jazz Festival), Toronto and Ottawa.

Will take note of your advice in traveling… I love to see every part of the world but it will be hurting my pocket definitely!!!!
I know there are many cities which I would love to visit - Paris, London, New York, San Francisco, Vancouver, Barcelona, Athens, Istanbul, Sydney and many more….
OH MY…. It will hurt me inside out in terms of $$$$$
August 19th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Oh about $$$$$, do your organisation sends its staff overseas for training or seminars?? Well thats one way to save $$$$. Many of my trips were actually sent by my organisation to attend conferences, seminars or meetings. For instance, I had to attend a UN Human Rights meeting in Geneva some years back for more than a month. So I took every opportunity to travel. Its easy because Geneva is so central in Europe and the trains go to Paris, Vienna, Paris, Venice and many other places.
But I think you will love Vancouver, judging from your blog. Its so beutiful there and not that expensive.

This means u must be working for UN… this is so nice… How I wish i get to work such organisation…Hahahaha…
Don’t worry, my company is aiming for an incentive trip to Spain or Greece end of this year!! I am hoping for Spain in fact…

Grace, hi,
Just to let you know that I may drastically cut on my blogging at Bangsa Malaysia (or even quit altogether) as my eyes are giving me some problem. I don’t think I look at a computer monitor for long.
I have a lighter project at this moment gathering resources and online ebooks and articles on HR for Human Rights defenders and students. Its at : http://www.hrforall.wordpress.com/
You may wish to link it if visitors to your site would like to know more about human rights and the promotion and protection of human rights in Malaysia.
