Felt “STUPIDER” with PMR English

15 April 2008

I have been complaining days and nights regarding the level of English being taught in our national schools lately.

PMR English

As I flipped through English Form 3 PMR Model Tests workbook, I almost fainted.

Now, I am going to shock you especially for those who were English-educated or grew up in the 60’s to the early 90’s.

PMR English

Are you telling me that a 15-year old guy or girl does not understand the word “on duty“?

I strongly believe my 12-year old brother would understand this simple phrase.

PMR English

I don’t understand why the Education ministry need to insert so many unnecessary graphic materials into PMR English examination.

Honestly speaking, I felt they degraded the language as well as my IQ!!

PMR English

I am pretty sure parents would educate their kids that this is a NO-ENTRY sign since young.

Why wait till he or she is 15 years-old???

PMR English

Now this irritates me. Is this paper testing our PMR kids their language skills or household skills?

I really wonder.

PMR English

Isn’t this part of the Moral education or being taught in any other subjects besides English language?

The PMR kid that answers anything else but ’smoke’ would certainly deserve a whacking!

Frankly speaking, this question seems to be a bonus for everyone!

PMR English

Please don’t tell me they did not learn this when they were in primary school.

KEEP OFF THE GRASS is so common especially in Moral Education!!

PMR English

I felt that I became 10 times “stupider” (if this word ever exist in the dictionary).

I cannot believe that this is the level of English being taught in Malaysia. This is absolutely embarrassing! How can the nation achieve Vision 2020 when our future children are being taught with this lowly standard.

I cannot comprehend this. Aren’t they suppose to widen their English vocabulary at this age?

I am going to stock up shelves with more English workbooks (Singapore syllabus). No way my future kids are learning such degrading English in schools.

Now you tell me, is this what you expect from PMR standard of English?

No wonder many companies complain that many fresh graduates cannot converse in proper English. Now I know why.

hmm, this is really disturbing. i dont want to play the racist card here, but seriously the standard of manglish has dropped to a all new low.

IMHO, language is best taught not by teaching grammer, nouns, adjectives so on so forth.

I strongly believe that when it comes to language its best for the student to keep on trying to converse in the language to improve.

  2. geraldho Says:

Gosh…………shocking….i tot those were taught in Primary schools..???Oh man…………………….students have so much catching up to do man……..!!!

  3. Grace Says:

Kevin: It’s not only disturbing. It is squeezing my nerves because my brother is going to be in Form 1 next year. In this manner, my brother won’t be able to master the language well. Not only through conversing, the student must also cultivate the habit of reading!!!

Gerald: Yes, totally agree with you. They will have a long time to catch up.

  4. ivan wong Says:

haha muz have been chua soi lek who wrote tht book

  5. ivan wong Says:

omg kids now r getting more retarded
oklar haha nex time not my competition when they come to the workforce hehe

  6. tokmoh Says:

Ini, ini bodoh. Ini tak boleh berlaku, negara kita sentiasa berada dalam keadaan yang –bodoh. lololololol

The education system need to emulate IELTS style of analysing students’ English capability. Also, there’s a need to promote greater interest in the language.

Think abt this: there was a time people in kampung speak english freely like they’re in London, but today…ini, ini bahawasanya –bodoh.

My mom was among the last few batch to learn in an all-English education, n she’s never impressed by our education system since then. Kerismudin needs to get fired.

  7. Grace Says:

Ivan: What has CSL got to do with that book? OMG! Yes, it is getting more retarded… sigh…

Tokmoh: Macam mana tak boleh berlaku? Inilah kebenaran! Kebenaran yang tidak boleh dinafikan. Kerismudin kena fired, totally agree!!!

  8. me0wster Says:

    I feel stupider..

  9. Mr.Right Says:

Aku pun rasa soalan-soalan tu bodoh dan kementerian perlu lihat benda ni seriously.

But, we must remember PMR adalah public examination that also involve kampung and very rural area student. Maybe you can check their level of English language before you throws your stink opinion.

    Cheers…!

  10. Agagooga Says:

    Malaysia Boleh!

  11. kevin Says:

ivan : ummm…retarded CSL froggie pose….*points at ivan*

tokmoh : bodohmuddin is actually doing his job well. bodowi wants him in his cabinet for doing a job well done in helping those who are weak in language become weaker.

grace n tim :thats y its up to us to make sure of next of kin is educated ourselves at home.

  12. amilyn Says:

im a malaysian living in brunei and those stuff are taught in primary levels here laaaa…

  13. kevin Says:

mr stink : its not a stink opinion. ppl in rural areas having bad english and tahts a reason for the poor standards?

what about the higher standard bm now?

  14. Grace Says:

meowster: I knew how u felt.

Mr Right: I know I must take consideration of kampung and rural areas… but I would say that, it should be the education ministry and rural development ministry to work together in enhancing the education process especially in the English language. Not just letting it getting worse, just like that. That is my opinion… whether it stinks or not, it is my view that the government should do something about the language before it gets too late. if not, we will be the laughing stock of the century.

    Agagooga: Malaysia tentu boleh!

Kevin: I will cooperate with u on that.

Amilyn: Well, i am not sure how we could contribute to the students now… but I do hope that our future generation would benefit from the education we have here….

  15. kevin Says:

i’m going to be very sarcastic here. is it justified to increase the difficulty level of BM and then lowering down the standard of English? you tell me. we all know the reason why.

we all know that the medium of communication in the working world is english and now mandarin is picking up fast. BM? i love the language, i scored A1 for it. but come on, face the music. zaman kegemilangan islam is long gone.

yet again, i dont expect much from a person whose blog clearly implies that malaysia is a kerajaan islam. ITS A SECULAR NATION.

  16. BEAN Says:

    HAHAHAH
Is that only for the MALAYS?

  17. geraldho Says:

    Mr Right: Hmmm…………how ‘inspiring’

    Kesian future negara….:P

  18. Yin Says:

There is no one and no place to blame for how the next generation will become, except our ‘GREAT’ government who ‘claims’ to be heading towards wawasan 2020. This is rediculously shocking. This was UPSR standard when they changed the english format in 1996. Seriously…some of our leaders ain’t leading well at all. Who the hell approve this into the education system.? WHAT EXACTLY ARE THEY EXPECTING FROM A 15 YR OLD THESE DAYS?!?!?….a mental ability of a 3 yr old…

  19. Yin Says:

argh…grace .. I am putting what you said to me before into reality. Looking at these really makes me angry and frustrated! arghh!

  20. Yin Says:

Gosh..I looked at it again. I figured, English teachers are not needed for this at all. Any kid can freakin do this. Its a disgrace for any english teacher to teach this subject if this is how it is going to be and no vocabs whatsoever involved.

  21. Megatron Says:

    WHAT WHAT WHAT????

THIS IS ENGLISH??? Did they print it from the MARS or what?

MY DOGssss CAN EVEN READ AND SCORE A1…. =p

Please la…. MALAYSIA…. for goodness sake!!! The more I read, the more stupid i feel and becomes, and the more Sickening I see this education level.

Mr. STINK: hei shit head, you stupid or what? Rural areas, instead of Governments trying to “LOWER” the lowest level for the rural or kampung area, They should be helping to bring these sections to a higher level and to help them improve la.

Imagine if the rural and kampung areas scored “A1″ with THESE LEVEL… so WHAT???? in the END…. THEY WILL DIE in the WORKING WORLD!!!!!! and in conclusion… MALAYSIA BOLEH!!!!

  22. yes2leong Says:

Hey megatron, relax man… haha…. i know how u felt. It’s true, our generation is getting worst n worst.

    Dear all,

YES, the Governments are looking at the wrong side of the window. We are all angry or, disappointed, or frustrated… YOU NAME IT. There is no use in roaring, shouting, cursing, or whatever.

So, what should we do then??? WE ARE THE GOLDEN GENERATION!!!!
WE SHOULD BE NOW, in wherever you are, do your part. Train, share, be a TEACHER, help your younger siblings, your younger cousins, your nephew or niece, your FUTURE children, FUTURE GRANDCHILDREN, FUTURE GRAND GRAND CHILDREN, and for the NEXT GENERATION to come….

HELP them… HELP MALAYSIA. Don’t just stay at home, or sit in front of your computer or TV, support this education system by helping the ones you can reach to. Let’s help make MALAYSIA, TO IMPROVE MORE!!!!!!!

P.S.: of cause, if can complain to the education system or education ministry or education society, PLS, GO AHEAD, VOICE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. tokmoh Says:

Mr. Right: Arararara, you clearly didn’t read my comment then, eh?

I would like to repeat: there was a time when if you enter any kampung, the people there can speak English just as fluent as the people in UK.

Constantly lowering the std of English results in today’s appalling command of English among Malaysians, and do you actually think that’s ok? How is that gonna solve the problem?

For that reason is why we need to promote a greater interest in the language, it’s the 21st century, and now with China and India’s rise as the future economic giant, there’s already emphasis to learn Mandarin in Germany, I’ve seen it in DW-TV!!

We? Tak apa lah……kita pandai BM je boleh dah…tok sak looor nak pi blajaq cakap orang putih tu, depa keje nak bunuh sedara kite kat Palestin je, heh, pasai tu loor kite dah kata tak naq kat UMNO!! We’ve voted for a change!! It’s about time we strengthen ourselves, by beating those orang putih at their own game, just like we used!! Sebab tu la ini tak boleh berlaku, negara kita sentiasa berada dalam keadaan yang –bodoh.

My condolenses and Al-fatihah to your late father and uncle, forgive me if I’m too harsh for you, but as they always say, the truth hurts, thus we must live to be strong to face the truth and get things right!!

  24. Grace Says:

Kevin: Agree with you on that 100%. This is a secular nation!!!

BEAN: I am not sure, you can ask Mr Kerismuddin perhaps! =)

    Gerald: Pity your kids too!!!

Yin: WOW, don’t be so angry…. cool down. I guess we should help to figure out a solution rather than ranting it days and nights about the problem. Right? Well, after all this is our country. This is where we grew up. We were educated here once too. We can fix it! (Hopefully!)

Megatron: Wow, cool nick. Back to the topic, well, I guess we share the same dilemma regarding the current education system.

Isaac: Ah Loong, I suddenly realised that your English improved a lot lately…. did you attend any English classes recently? I guess your job as an AIA trainer really helped a lot in your language. Good job!!! Now back to the topic, Yes… VOICE OUT and HELP MALAYSIA!

Tokmoh: Sometimes, there are ppl who just want to repudiate the fact that English plays a vital role in this century. What can we do?

Tak pe lah, tok moh. Biarkan lah.

its like criticism, criticize constructively, not destructively.

the rest : bugger too many to reply.

  26. Grace Says:

Kevin: I still love your comment at No.15 for this entry. That is classic!!! You’re definitely a fighter, dude! Malaysia’s hope is in one of your hands!!

  27. yes2leong Says:

    Tokmoh:
I Dun think tat “mr. stink” will come back anyway… lol… let’s not, “for the sake of 1 tree, we forgot the whole forest” hahah…..

Grace: hehe…. English improved a lot ah? meaning last time mine still cacat lo.. hehe… but, ya… i guess it’s the training ground in AIA that i got to improve a lot. anyway, haha… i felt like i was giving a INDEPENDENT speech for MALAYSIA’s Education… haha….

ER….. Malaysia’s HOPE IS IN ONE OF KEVIN’s HAND??? then the other hand??? how can kevin support with just one hand? HABIS!!!! THE WORLD IS DOOMED!!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!! MALAYSIA IS IN KEVIN”S HAND!!! NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! =p

  28. yes2leong Says:

    Grace & Kevin:
wah… so sweet… will corporate for YOUR future kins “together”… awww…. *sob sob* I also want to find my other half to work together with me to support OUR KINs…. =p *touching story*….

Gerald ho must also find his “darline Ho”, I mean, His “Darling oh”… hehehe….. if not… *i’m so lonely, I’m so lonely, I have nobody, All of my own… ohhhhhh”*…. hehehe

    To the rest:
TOO MANY “burgers”, i mean, buggers to reply… ahahahahha

  29. Jesca Says:

oh..i rmbr teaching a gal for PMR also. Encountered similar-type of questions..but she couldn answer well.

Sometimes, i guess, the government cannot cater to all.

No doubt, many of us would think that the standard of PMR english is -low-, but im pretty sure there are a lot of poor english speaking students out there. The current standard (that we think is low) is actually really tough for them.

  30. kimbeng Says:

Our t-ching education is lock! It make-d I two who is I today…

  31. lizze Says:

truly saying, the standard for Malaysia English is kinda mushy mushy. It totally not the standard as compare to our previous ancestors.
Previously our land was a British colonial land…
    * now, see what had happened to process of changing to English standard to suit all Malaysians..

I have to agreed that (*no wonder Lots of Malaysian are unemployed in This land)…

If, this is the kind of standard prolong. Then Malaysian will be a laughing stock for international faces, when a Malaysian open his or her mouth to speak English.

  32. me0wster Says:

Mr Right: And if those people do not buck up and learn English, shall we all blame you because the exam was too easy and it did not help them build it up? Should I tell my kids this, “Oh, the PMR is easy because the people in the kampung cannot cope with it?” or “PMR is easy because the kampung people are stupid?” (no punt intended here =/) I learnt BM. Hell, my exam marks was better than most of the people who spoke it as natively.

This is what I will say. Crawl out from under your ‘tempurung’ and look at the world in a global view. Either you speak English or Mandrin. If not, go back and hide under it and never come out! Go back and rant at akubetul dot com. Don’t go to people’s blog and talk rubbish.

  33. Grace Says:

Wow…. strings of comments into this entry.

I guess you guys must have a passion for the English to grow deeper in this country since we were under British colonial rule before.

How I wish (like what Tokmoh mentioned) that it’s an all-English education whereby everyone can master both languages of English as well as the national language.

If the Irish people can study English and Irish and excel both languages together, why not us? If the Canadians can study French and English together, why not us?

Why must we level down ourselves to cater to the kampung ppl. Now, as I have mentioned earlier, it is high time that they should strive hard to master both languages at the same time. English, no matter what will always be the international language especially business. The government must do something about it. The government must pump in more $$$ to allow sufficient education in rural areas so that the kids in kampung can learn how to speak and write GOOD ENGLISH too!!! Stop pumping $$$ to useless training centres in UK or Spaceman or unnecessary projects.

    Malaysians need QUALITY education!!

  34. Yin Says:

Lets all not forget; English being an INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE. so a kampung guy who claims to master in this english paper could possibly represent our country? This will end up being an embarrassment to the country.

  35. kevin Says:

omg, just because of one mr right’s wrong comment it generated this amount of spam. wow. you guys bash/flame like proton bashers man.

  36. Jillian Says:

i agree that the level of form 3 english is horrible in malaysia.. but then again, i think one has to take into consideration who the author of that workbook you referred to is.. sometimes these authors are well, qualified but it seems to me that a lot of them just hentam crap only for the sake of ‘publishing’ something.. i’ve seeen myself, some books are really lousy but some are okay..

nonetheless, pmr level of english; bad.

  37. Grace Says:

Yin: For education wise, stay in Australia, my dear Yin.
Kevin: This is what I called passionate readers!!! They love English!!!
    Jillian: These publishers are crooks!!!

  38. nicholas Says:

the after effects after hishamuddin takes over reign of the edu empire, still recall those days when UPSR was like a matter of life and death, and people actually suicide for failing PMR…those days was way tougher, but today hey look on the bright side, they truly have a reason to suicide if they fail PMR especially English…coz it would take a retard to fail.

  39. Grace Says:

Nic: Totally agree with you on this.

  40. tammy_夜眼 Says:

I agreed. The English level in Malaysia is totally primary school level. I’m facing PMR this year and I’ve no problem facing English papers. But some friends of mine, find it hard to score As in English. So, I spend my 1 hour after school time helping them out in English. But I still hope that the English and Science level and quality will raise>_<

  41. Henry Says:

totally agree with you, do u know? PMR 60% can get already…oh god…..(VOMIT!!!!!!!!!)

  42. PiggyGrace Says:

Tammy: The govt has to cater to all needs and of course Malays and rural ppl are the majority who has to be catered to comply with the level of English… so I just had to say “What to do?” because we’re in Malaysia.

Henry: If you vomit, I will just bring u a pail and advise u to stop vomitting as you would vomit even more in future….

    hmm…i agree with you,
    Malaysia is not kerajaan Islam
because our pemerintah didn’t understand bout Islam clearly
and when society not satisfy with our pemerintah or ketua yg beragama Islam…why they will automatically relate it to Islam?
saying Islam is that and this…why Islam always being
    misjudge? it soo sensitive ..
meanwhile, pemerintah tu sendiri tak amal aturan2 Islam
then when pemerintah tu makes mistakes they
thinks islam is not good and islam is kuno lah, karut la..

  44. Vicgal Says:

    Hey, this didn’t come as a shock….

After all… I was a product of that system! It’s a pity there we (the new generation) are all stuck in a degrading system that produces students of degraded quality.. know what I mean? But what to do?

I had to literally ’survive’ on reading Reader’s Digest and tons of English novels to keep my passion for the English language burning back during my primary and secondary school days…and thank God my parents made it a point for me to speak proper English at home… else I would have ended up ‘burried alive’ like the rest of them! Yeah, the rest of them.. like a few of my uni mates who may not understand what ‘keep off the grass’ means.. I’m telling you!

Guess we should really think twice before talking about producing world class education!

  45. PiggyGrace Says:

still learing: well, as what ur nick said… we are all still learning…

vicgal: glad that ur family has the implications of instiling English’s importance since young like mine… but not many families are as fortunate as us, or perhaps…some families do not even care bout english’s vitality for their children..

  46. Kim Says:

im 14 and going to sit for PMR next year.I study in a chinese medium private school where students study both the Singapore secondary school syllabus and the Msian syllabus. The difference between the two is huge…not only in English but in Maths and Science too.(English)Some of the stuff in Msian secondary school syllabus is already covered by the Singapore primary school syllabus. But im an avid reader and grew up in a family where everyone speaks English. So, the English PMR paper is really easy for me.But, a few of my friends in the 1st class even have difficulty scoring As.

I know that in kampung areas, the students are not so good in English as well as some other subjects. But, instead of lowering the standards of the PMR English paper or just raising it, they should pay attention to those areas and help the students.I agree with Megatron in this matter. They should help expand the school and send more good teachers to those areas. Some students there do not have enough nutrition( and that will stunt their mental and physical growth). The Government should help these students whose parents are not educated(most of them anyway). After ‘healing’ the kampung areas, then only can they raise the standard of PMR.

As a student of the Msian education system, I believe and know that the standards are extremely low. But we cannot just sit and wait for the government to take action. I think students should seek knowledge regardless of whether it is in the exams.

    (wow thats long…)

  47. Kim Says:

PMR and SPM results are not reconized in other countries. Not even our closest neighbour,Singapore. But that wasnt how it was before this. Why is it? BM standards are being raised, but English,Maths and Science are lowered?? OUR STANDARDS ARE TOO LOW!!!

  48. PiggyGrace Says:

    Hey Kim,

I truly understand your predicament. With that, I have decided to let my future kids to undergo a more resounding education in overseas. Definitely not here. I think it’s a bit too late to heal the “sickness” of the education system. They are too arrogant to listen to our solutions.

With that, I am proud that you seek knowledge yourself without relying on the sick and absurd system. Keep up the good work and I truly believe you will soar like an eagle as you pursue your tertiary education.

    I believe you can!

Take care and God Bless, Kim!

  49. Syafiqa Says:

i’m gonna sit for pmr examination this year and i totaly agree with your guys opinion but fyi to get an A1 is depends on our essays in paper two because it’s realy hard to score there…. and i guess that ’s the reason why the ministry making the paper 1 as easy as a piece of cake… you know to help people in rural area to pass only… but i’m sure that teachers like one in my school had taught their students more than that….and it’s not fair to say that islam glory had gone ok?? wacth what you said.. and it’s also a stupid thing to kaitkan bm with islam ok??? just think about other’people feeling when you talk…. and remember that this is a Islam country which means that there’s a lot of muslim here….

Hi Syafiqa, thank u for your comment.. I am sure the commentors above didn’t mean that islam glory has gone. They are all talking about the problem of education and English in this country.

  50. kevin Says:

syafiqa : this is the problem with our education system. since young we were spoon fed to digest information and then regurgitate it out again during the exams with literally no basics of application at all.

since when is malaysia an islamic country? grow up and read up on articles and you will find history is written by those in power and those power refuse to be removed from power.

you truly believe that the glory of islam is there? its the oil that is supporting you right now, and believe me, when it runs out, it runs out. look into the media now, how is islam being potrayed. answer that truthfully.

the simple fact is one. the usage of bahasa melayu as lingua franca has passed. english will always be the medium and benchmark of communication in life. unless somehow china breeds more and more kids to gobble up the world.

and believe me, nothing is more important in life than communication.

  51. Syafiqa Says:

i do read a lot kevin… and iknow how’s Islam had been potrayed… but if you try to find an article about Islam you will know most of people in the world are muslim and the article also said that not long islam will get it’s glory back… you cannot comment me on that because that article is written by an english man(i cannot remember his name) not a muslim or what… maybe if i found that article again i can published it here … and i wanna be one of the person who get the islam glory back… trust me islam is a beautiful religion and it;s beauty cannot be found in other’s… anyway do you have a magnificent way to improve our english?? well just wanna know… one more thing BM is also important and had been commonly use.. it’s our national language… that’s what make we differ ok???

  52. PiggyGrace Says:

To whoever who is going to comment,

let’s NOT talk about religion in this blog entry before I start banning your comments…

we don’t care whose religion is more beautiful or more glorified…what I CARE right now is the ENGLISH language’s progress in the education system in this country!!!!

    On the other note…

maybe u should click on these sites for more information on religions…if you want to learn more… go to those sites below:-

and NOT debating it here in my blog.

Appreciate all your cooperation on this!

    Thank you.

  53. kevin Says:

since when has islam been the leading religion in the world? statistik u pun dah salah. just because an article was written by some mat salleh, does that mean that the contents of his article is valid just because he is a mat salleh? just look at your own thoughts. wouldnt it be more logical that is some high ranking preacher of islamic religion coming out with an article far more convincing and more justified than some donkey mat salleh?

every religion want their glory and wants to be far more superior than the other religions because every religion believes and have faith that their teachings are the right one.

one way to improve english is definitely NOT making the exams for the language any easier. making BM tougher is also not a way. the education system itself is problematic. whats the use of having students memorizing things and not applying it? i am lucky because i am blessed with a better than average otak.

state a few countries besides indonesia which uses BM. USED ALOT? you gotta be kidding me. perhaps you should consider reading one particular book.

its called the malay dilemma by mahathir.
