26 November 2007
I have refrained myself from entering the city since Friday. I did not want myself to be choked with a mad traffic jam.
If you have read today’s newspapers, I am sure you would have known about the recent Hindraf rally which took place yesterday in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Due to this demonstration, the police force has set up roadblocks all over the major roads leading into the city since Thursday, which has resulted in a traffic chaos among the motorists in the Klang valley. However, you might not be able to see the whole picture of the Hindraf rally through the local media.

Justice for all Malaysian Indians
I suggest if you would like to know more, you can always view from various sources such as Malaysiakini or Malaysia Today or Jeff Ooi’s Screenshots. These are some of the top sites for unfiltered news that you never have a chance to read from local newspapers.

The crowd that builds up to nearly 30,000 as reported by Malaysiakini.
HINDRAF or Hindu Rights Action Force is a coalition of 30 Hindu Non-Governmental organizations committed to the preservation of Hindu community rights and heritage in secular Malaysia. The group has led agitations against the demolition of Hindu temples by the government and criticized the pro-Islamic policies of the state. It was also established to fight and prevail justice suffered by Hindus which are the minority community in Malaysia. (Source)

Malaysian Indians gather together
The memorandum was to raise the economic plight of Malaysian Indians and to urge the Queen to appoint a Queen’s counsel to argue Hindraf’s US$4 trillion class action suit against the British government for neglecting the community’s welfare after bringing their forefathers to Malaya as indentured labourers 150 years ago. Some said that it was to raise the awareness of the marginalised Indians who wanted more freedom. Freedom of education, freedom of religion, freedom as declared by what the true definition of democracy.

Chemical-laced water cannon was thwarted by the police force, to disperse the crowd
In fact, from what I have seen in the videos posted on Youtube and the pictures posted by various sources in the Internet, the police are overdoing it. They are the ones turning KL into a war zone, not the protesters.

Tear gas was fired to send the crowd into helter-skelter

How Do I Feel?
I personally feel that democracy is ultimately being suppressed in this country. The minority community in Malaysia is just expressing their thoughts via the gathering, yet the government seems to be in the state of denial. Democracy is totally vanishing into thin air if the government continues to turn the deaf ear on the citizens’ cry.
What the police force has done, was simply inappropriate and uncalled for. Yes we all know that the gathering is illegal. However, they came in peace, and they just wanted to gather peacefully. Yet, the police and FRU fired tear gas and chemical-laced water cannons to these demonstrators who did nothing but gathered.
I am simply disappointed with the police force. Utterly disappointed with the government’s hand in this matter.
It is no wonder why many are fleeing the country. Democracy is lacking in Malaysia. The minority would love to be patriotic and express their loyalty and love for the nation. But these minority ethnic groups are not being appreciated and loved. They voices can’t be heard. The government cannot blame those who renounce their citizenship due to apparent lack of patriotism.
I hope these Hindraf and Bersih demonstrations will be a wake-up call for the ruling government to realize what has gone hay-wire in the administration. It is time to serve the nation’s people the right way. It is time to fix the wrong. It is not too late.
We can’t just wait till the next elections to come to decide. Some might hope to vote the opposition or even worse, to vote the system down. Even then, the opposition parties are not coming out strong like the mighty and ever dominating UMNO, thus it will be hard to determine through the ballot boxes. The only way is give the current government a tight slap to do something for the nation.
Wake up, Malaysia. Wake up!
Don’t get me wrong, guys. Even if I agree to certain things by the opposition, it doesn’t mean I am pro-opposition. If I agree to certain things brought up by the government, it also doesn’t mean I am pro-government. If you are wrong, you are wrong. If you are right, I will support you.
At the end of the day, it is all about Politics. Politics Oh Politics!
By the way, a lot of Chinese wouldn’t even care less about politics. As long as they can continue their businesses, life goes on as usual.
POLITICS. *Sigh*
It is one heck of a subject which is difficult to be understood by many of us.
